Signs and symptoms of Silicosis |
| Silicosis is a respiratory disease caused by inhalation of silica dust, which
leads to inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue. If the exposure to silica is intense then Silicosis
may develop in a year or less, but it usually takes at least 10 or 15 years of exposure before symptoms
develop. |
 |
| Silica is a component of sand, so sand-blasters and glass workers may be
constantly exposured to silica. Other workers at risk include: Quarrying and stone cutting, road and
building construction, work with abrasives manufacturing and mining. |
 |
| There are 3 types of silicosis dependant upon the airborne
concentration of crystalline silica: |
 |
Chronic Silicosis usually occurs after 10 or more years of over
exposure and is the most common form. |
 |
| Accelerated Silicosis results from higher exposures and
develops over 5 to 10 years. |
 |
Acute Silicosis occurs where exposures are the highest and
can cause symptoms to develop within a few weeks |
