Signs and symptoms of Occupational Emphysema |
| 80-90% of emphysema cases are due to tobacco smoking, but emphysema can also
be caused by prolonged exposure to dust, the inhaled dust settles in the lungs and damages them.
The alveoli of the lungs are dilated which may lead to the walls of the lungs becoming small and
shriveled, causing severe obstruction of the airways. This condition can be caused by exposure to
coal dust by working in coal mines and/or other industries such as foundries and potteries. The
initial symptoms of emphysema are persistent cough, breathlessness and fatigue. This may progress
to a stage where the sufferer is housebound and dependent upon oxygen apparatus. |
