Signs and symptoms of Occupational Emphysema

80-90% of emphysema cases are due to tobacco smoking, but emphysema can also be caused by prolonged exposure to dust, the inhaled dust settles in the lungs and damages them. The alveoli of the lungs are dilated which may lead to the walls of the lungs becoming small and shriveled, causing severe obstruction of the airways. The initial symptoms of emphysema are persistent cough, breathlessness and fatigue. This may progress to a stage where the sufferer is housebound and dependent upon oxygen apparatus.

Emphysema results in inefficient and difficult breathing. In addition, because of the reduced capacity to exchange gases with each breath, it is necessary to breathe more frequently. Because of the discomfort and incapacity that can result from this, it also affects the quality of life of the patient.
