  Types of Occupational Dermatitis
Skin diseases (Dermatitis) often occur after exposure to chemicals such as solvents and acids.
There are two main types of dermatitis - irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.
Irritant contact dermatitis
80% of cases of contact dermatitis are caused by an irritant reaction - The direct effect of an irritant substance on the skin, usually on the hands. If applied over a long period, in sufficient concentration, the irritant substance can cause an inflammatory reaction. These irritants are often found in a work environment usually in wet work industries such as cleaning, hairdressing, building sites and horticulture.
People with dry skins or who suffer from eczema, asthma or hay fever are more likely to develop an irritant contact dermatitis.
Allergic contact dermatitis
If exposed to a particular chemical or a group of chemicals, the skin inflammation is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction, acting through the body's immune system.
Substances that may cause allergic contact dermatitis include: hairdressing chemicals, skin medications, fragrances, rubber, some plants, nickel and formaldehyde.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may have a claim.
